Highlights of this year's Lotusphere
Following topics have been highlighted in this year's opening session:
- Lotus Traveler: Traveler is the mobile component of the Lotus Domino server and it allows you to synchronize mails and contacts to your PDA. The product plans mention support for encrypted mails on the iPhone, support for Android PDA's and support for Traveler on Linux since the server component could only be installed on Windows up till now.
- Cloud computing: again much attention for Saas (Software as a service) models. IBM will make it easier for developers to build applications in the cloud and the LotusLive offering will be enriched with other elements of the Lotus product portfolio. You'll see te addition of Domino and Sametime servers, and also communities - which you know from Lotus Connections - will be supported at LotusLive.
- Project Vulcan: this is actually the blueprint of the future of Notes. IBM wants to show how the Notes client can evolve in the coming years and much of this will become part of Notes 9. You'll see tighter integration between the Lotus collaboration products around today, and Notes will be the rich client to support it.
- Quickr Next: is the next version of the team collabration product Quickr. The product will become more alligned with Domino and features you can expect are improvements in document versioning, folder level ACLs, ECM integration to store documents directly in a backend system like IBM Filenet or Alfresco and integration of the team calendar into your personal calendar. GFI takes part in the Quickr 8.5 beta program and the updates seem promising
